Learn to produce accessible PDF documents using Adobe InDesign CC and Acrobat DC with this course for professional InDesign users. You'll explore advanced techniques for creating accessible content, ensuring compliance with WCAG standards and making your documents usable by everyone.
The course covers crucial layout, tagging and metadata practices helping you craft well-structured, user-friendly PDFs. It’s ideal for anyone who needs to create professional accessible documents and already has a good working knowledge of InDesign and Acrobat DC.
In this 1-day course, you'll work on hands-on projects mastering the tools and techniques to confidently produce accessible PDFs. You’ll leave with practical skills you can immediately apply to your projects.
Course Target Audience and delegate prerequisites:
This course is intended for those who wish to enhance their existing knowledge of InDesign to focus on creation of accessible PDFs for producing documents available for all.
You will need a good working knowledge of using InDesign. Ideally, you will have at least taken our Adobe InDesign CC Introduction 2 Day course. -
Full Course Outline
The following is a general outline. The range of topics covered during your training is dependent upon student level, time available and preferences of your course booking.
Objectives- This course is designed for those needing to create accessible PDF documents using Adobe InDesign CC and Acrobat DC.
- Good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat DC Pro
- Reference slides
- Notes
- Examples
- Understanding how users with disabilities access electronic information
- Overview of standards, e.g., WCAG and UKAAF
- Minimise text frames using text frame options and span columns
- Use paragraph styles consistently and hierarchically throughout the document
- Establish export tag relationships between InDesign styles and PDF tags
- Anchor images within content flow
- Add alternative text for images
- Incorporate internal document navigation mechanisms, e.g., tables of contents, bookmarks, hyperlinks, cross-references
- Establish content order using the Articles panel
- Specify a document title and description as metadata
- Adding titles and metadata using panels
- Export as PDF with settings optimised for accessibility
Further Required Adjustments in Acrobat DC Pro- Set the language in document properties
- Change display name from Filename to Document Title
- Set tab order to use document structure in Page Thumbnails pane
- Add alternative text for images if not done first in InDesign
- Tagging a table
- Run the Acrobat accessibility checker

As a bespoke course the date arrangement is based around your requirements and availability in our schedule. With your guide of when you are looking for the training we will advise suitable date options ahead of finalising the planned date(s).
Can the content be tailored to my requirements?
Yes we are flexible about tailoring content and can adapt to be fully based on your requirements, a mixture of content from different levels of our base courses or a base outline with some additional focus areas.
Can this course be delivered live online?
Yes we can provide the same bespoke course as a live online session connecting to you or your group with either Zoom or Microsoft Teams if preferred.
What is the cost to deliver the course onsite?
We are equally able to deliver our bespoke training onsite at your premises and the cost to deliver this is the same structure as classroom with the addition of basic expenses depending on your location. Onsite courses in and around London, Manchester and Glasgow are usually without additional costs.
Can the course include my work samples?
It is often possible to review and include consideration towards sample files however the main course content is usually structured around prepared examples which are best suited to the planned content and structure of teaching the required skills in the best format.
